February 2010 Artefact; stage 7

Today I am going to be doing stage 7 - completion of your visual arts final piece.
- I will be putting our plans into practice
- collect materials that I have got for our product
- prepare each stage that I am going to do; identifying the safety issues
- carry out the processes we have planned to make our piece.

Today my goal is to drill
the slats onto the chest and update my coursework on this project also keep my process portfolio up to date.

Before i could start doing the practical work on the machines i had to think about machine
safety and things I need to do to make sure when I use the machines I am safe....

- safety guard
- wear goggles
- no jewelry
- tie your hair back
- concentrate
-

Firstly I made a template and then stuck it on the
wood so that the
slats (which were cut out on the laser cutter) would sit on the wood inside it. I didn't plan on making this pieces of wood however I think it is necessary because they will sit and look
better. After doing this on the scroll saw I then sanded it down so it fitted exactly.
Then I drilled holes in the 21 slats so that I could tack them to the wood. I did this by using the drill and making a template on the machine so that each time I did the holes they were all equal. By drilling the
holes it stops the wood from cracking and also I am going to be using PVA glue to stick the wooden pieces to the chest to make it secure and the glue that I am using is non toxic so it is
not harmful to the environment.

This morning I have achieved more than I had planned and
are now head of schedule so this afternoon I am planning to put the slats on the box. This process will be time consuming because I have to drill each slat individually and make them fit exactly - this is a very precise stage in the project.
However if I could have changed this morning's outcome I would have said that we could work a bit better as a group because some people in the f=group didn't contribute as much as they could have. Overall I think we could have worked together better in making the decisions and sharing the job roles that we had to do today.

This afternoon I am planning to drill the holes to the wood, glue it into place also and maybe if we have time sand some of the box ready for wood staining and varnishing.

I did not complete all of this afternoons goals because I didn't have enough time and only managed to drill holes in all of the slats - measuring the right places and I sanded the inside supporting pieces of wood. However the next day I came back to glue the pieces of wood on the inside, using clamps and I also attached smaller pieces of wood on the inside making the box overall stronger.

Today I think that i have worked consistently to achieve my goal which i set at the beginning of the day and i worked well independently to achieve this, something which towards the beginning of this project I wasn't very good at achieving and i struggled to work independently.

PLATS
- Today I think that I have achieved...
* RL3 because I reviewed what I've done, achieved and how i could have improved.
* SM3 because I looked at the time we had and planned if we would have enough time to do these stages today.
* EP1 I discussed my concerns with my group about the lack of teamwork and contributions that was being made to this mornings activities.
