- what i need to do today...
today I am going to have a meeting with my client. They will be discussing the different artifacts they would like us to make, how they want us to make them, explain their reasons for requiring this artifact and the deadline (when they would like this product to be made by.) After this I need to discuss with my group different ideas about how each product will look and be made.
January 27th
today I need to make plans and generate ideas of how we could create our artifact and the different ways we should go about researching into the artifact. In addition i also need to create up to 5 designs for all possible ways the treasure chest could be designed and made. I also need to generate ideas to my group of the best possible ways that this treasure chest could be made from and all the different materials we will need. In addition today i will also need to research into different places where I can source the materials from and compare prices and qualities. Then finally I need to come up with a final design calculation how large we would like the chest to be and get feedback from my group about what they think of my design and anything that i can improve on. After this I am then going to be making a prototype to present to our client who we will be seeing today. When I see my client I will present all my ideas and sketches to show how I am going to create their artifact.
February - March
This is stage three. This process will take me a few weeks. I am going to be researching into how the treasure chest first began, who made them, who owned them and any other information about them that is relevant to this topic. I am also going to research into the adaptions of the treasure chest and what we use them for today. This means I am going to pick three other objects which have adapted over a period of time to change to the needs of that era. In addition to this i will also be researching how each product is made, the tools they use, who makes them, why they made them and how long it took.
February 3rd
Today I am going to analyze further the different materials i can use for my chest, why they will be the best and how accessible they will be. I am going to also make a scale model of the treasure chest so I know how big the life size chest will be so I know if i need to change the size or structure of the chest. After doing this and checking it is an appropriate size we can start cutting out the pieces of wood for the base and sides. This will mean measuring and using machinery which i haven't used before. The final thing i will need to do today is make a final list of all the other materials i am going to need during this module and where i am going to get them from.
February 10th
Today I am going to be doing a workshop at Porchester school. This workshop is going to teach me about telling a story through props and costume. We also have an hour practical in this time I am hoping to make a brief week by week plan showing what I would like to do every week, my goals and things that I would like to achieve by the end of the day. I am also going to be exploring how I am going to do each process, the time it is going to take me and what I will need to schedule my time appropriately.
February 24th
Today I have a five hour practical. Today I want to get all the materials together that the technology department has and then we I will have an idea of the things which I will need to buy in for the treasure chest. I would also like to measure and cut out the sides for the treasure chest. I am going to have to use the scroll saw for this stage to cut the sides out, I am not very confident on the saw and i am going to have to learn how to use the machine properly. After cutting the sides out I am going to saw them so there are no sharp edges and it is a smooth surface, giving it more of a professional look.
March 3rd
Today we are going for a workshop at Porchester school from a set designer. We are going to be creating our own set designs and we are going to be given good pointers on how to create it. Today we are not going to be working on the treasure chest because the workshop is all day so we will have to work harder next week to get on schedule and so we meet our deadline.
March 10th
Today is a whole day of practical. I am going to be making the lid for my treasure chest. The lid is going to be made by individual slats cut to fit to make the shape of the lid and then we will be drilling holes and using a Rivet gun to make it hold together. this stage is going to be complicated because of all the individual slats which have to be done, hopefully if this stage is done right it will take between 1hour-2hours. Then I am going to attach the velvet to the inside of the box after cleaning it out.
March 17th
Today I am going to be doing the final stages of the treasure chest. This includes glueing the gems to the box, attaching the padlock to the box and sanding down parts which need to re-done. I am going to need strong glue to stick on the gems so they will stay on and I am going to need to drill holes into the box so I can attach the padlock base and then hook the padlock onto the treasure chest. Sticking the gems on by hand is going to take time because we are going to have to plan where the gems are going to go, the colour scheme and how many we want to stick on.
March 24th
Today is the final morning and then we will be handing over the treasure chest to the client in the afternoon. The only thing left to do on the treasure chest is drill holes into the sides of the box and attaching the handles. We haven't decided on the material we are going to use - rope or leather. i am going to have to decide nearer the time. The final thing i am going to do before the hand over is making a short presentation of how we made the chest and the processed I went through to get there, we will be presenting it to the client. it will include pictures of how we progressed and the stages.
